The Three Laws of Robotics Have Failed the Robots
- dredmorbius 4y agoAsimov's Three Laws are a literary trope, and their primary goal was to serve as a foil and frame for creating stories. The conflict in the laws is what drives those stories, and can be found in many forms and variants throughout the stories in I Robot and the extended arc. The laws are also interesting statements on morality and ethics. The fact that morality and ethics finds itself wrestling with terms which are ambiguous or of contested meaning, that boundaries are hard to draw, and that choosing the best of several alternatives is hard ... would not come as a surprise to the philosophers of ancient Greece or China. Welcome to the real world.
