Florence is still a city, what do you mean?

  Around the 16th century it was a place that had an unusually large collection of intellectuals, misfits, artists, and eccentrics. Paul Graham talks in one of his essays about going to Florence and it expecting it to be like Davinci wrote about and it not living up. At the time of the writing I think it was implied SF might be the new Florence.
