I am going to propose a radical idea: There is NO PATTERN. People reach mastery and expertise in all different kinds of ways. Some folks have it handed to them on a silver platter, others overcome outrageously unfair circumstances, some do it alone, some have mentors, some read-learn-do, some just do, some do it despite hating what they do, others do it out of love.
