“Encrypted planning, high-power firearms make extremist threat in US unique”
- josephcsible 4y agoLet's gut both the Second and Fourth Amendments, because terrorists!
- bediger4000 4y agoThere really isn't much left of the 4th amendment. I think the model for shaving the 4th amendment so thin it doesn't really exist will work on 1A, too! We could start by making criticism of religions not free speech. We could "open up" libel laws by narrowing the "truth is a defense" doctrine, and narrowing the requirement for malice when reporting about public figures.
- car_analogy 4y ago> "There are fewer opportunities for us to detect and disrupt their plots before they happen," Olsen explained. They always do this sleight of hand. All the facial recognition, PRISM, metadata analysis, automated license plate readers, ubiquitous surveillance cameras, cell-phone tracking, gait analysis, search history courtesy of Google - all of it counts for nothing if there are a handful of encrypted messages they can't bulk spy on. (I say 'bulk' because it is trivial to point a telescopic lens at a suspect while they are typing a password, or plant a hardware bug to capture every keystroke when they're not home, or even plant a microphone (all methods that have dramatically fallen in price). You just can't do it to a hundred thousand people at once.) They want all of our attention on the tiny scrap of privacy we have left, and to ignore the panopticon the rest of the world has turned into.
