Ask HN: Are there any music composition programs for Linux beginners?
I'd like to enter short melodies and see what a computer could elaborate on. Kind of like computer jazz or something. I'd like to compose songs that are only about a minute and 20 seconds long that I can string together to make a video presentation. Is there anything like that in the world of linux? I don't mind cracking open python code to make it work but I'd like to see what is already off the shelf. Thanks in advance.
- p1esk 4y agoClosest to what you described is http://aiva.ai http://aiva.ai (commercial product). You could experiment with OpenAI Jukebox but there’s a steep learning curve and you would need a decent GPU. Other than that I don’t think there are good open source models to do conditional music generation. I might be wrong though.
- ohiovr 4y agoThat is certainly a very interesting suggestion. Thank you.

- ohiovr 4y agoThank you. I'm going to try my hand at making a music for narration script in the style of mellow-trons. I'm using speech per word timings to drive a metronome at this time so it seems that I can plow ahead using mostly just sox and audacity.
- usrn 4y agoI've always loved Milkytracker. It might not be exactly what you want but it's pretty popular and a lot of fun.
