[Data Viz] After Uvalde, Gun Buying Searches Went Through the Roof in the US
- IndySun 4y agoNot a surprising result in any way. More importantly, you can't have more guns and less mass shootings. More guns equal more mass shootings. Am I wrong? Of course I am right. But it is also how enough of voting Americans wish to live, i.e., in fear, but with an opportunity of return fire. More guns, so the argument goes, offer the scant odds to those good people in the right place at the right time to do the right thing. This does not seem like a logical way to grow a peaceful society. I wish I could feel more empathy for this reasoning. Can anyone help me with some solid statistics backing up 'more guns' being safer?
- bediger4000 4y agoThis doesn't seem rational. Since the federal bad on assault rifles expired, the USA has done nothing to control guns in any form. There won't be any gun control at all. But people buy more guns every time there's a shooting in the news. Why?
- jfengel 4y agoBecause every time they do, there's a rush of "They're going to ban guns, so buy them now" postings on social media. It never happens, but that just means we go through the same dance every time.
- bediger4000 4y agoSo nobody learns? This is the proverbial boy who calls wolf, but for 30 years. Why don't they learn?
- jfengel 4y agoYou can fool some of the people all of the time. Especially when you've got an industry devoted to the problem. What's more remarkable, perhaps, is that so many people seem content to let others believe it. Not every gun owner rushes out to buy more guns. But when the social media groups start saying "They're going to ban your guns for real this time!", there doesn't seem to be anybody saying "No, they didn't any of the last 10 times, either." It is expedient for them to let everybody believe that it's about to happen -- not so that they'll buy more guns, but to ensure that gun rights are the top voting priority. The purchase of even more guns is just a side effect.
