While fascinating to see, I’d be more interested in details about the court case that lead to these contempt charges, since it sounds like someone really lost their shit, but more often a contempt charge is due to obstinate behaviour of various levels of politeness.
- skissane 4y agoConcise summary: YouTube comedian accuses politician of being corrupt. Politician sues both the comedian and Google for defamation. Comedian eventually settles. Google takes the case to court, but then days before the trial starts their lawyers withdraw all their defences, announcing that they have no defence to the lawsuit. Judge is upset at Google for wasting the Court’s time - if their defence is that they literally don’t have one, why did they wait until so late in the process to admit that? More central to the charge of contempt, however, is that the comedian’s initial response to the lawsuit was to treat it as part of the joke, including pulling stunts on the plaintiff at public events - and Google facilitated that by hosting those videos.
- techdragon 4y agoWow that was pretty stupid of them. This, while funny, is the sort of “polite obstinacy” I was talking about, the lawyers obstinately proceeded all the way to the courtroom when they probably should have quickly settled just like the comedian and it likely wouldn’t have cost them this much in time, money and bad PR.
