How the Federal Government Buys Our Cell Phone Location Data
- 0daystock 4y ago> What can we do? > Congress must ban federal government purchase of sensitive location information. > The developers of mobile operating systems also have power to shut down this insidious data market. > you can disable your advertising identifier > You can also look at the apps on your phone and turn off any unnecessary permissions granted to third-party apps Weak EFF demonstrates again why they lost my monthly donations. They should be recommending totally eschewing social media, replacing spyware operating systems with foss, and simply explaining in plain language - if your mobile device has the capability to install "apps" from the "app store" - the device itself is inherent spyware which multiplies this problem. Instead we get the equivalent of hopes and prayers.

- mistrial9 4y agoI met an EFF person on an early morning walk, accidentally within the last year. She wore the EFF brand shirt proudly and was quite confident. After the initial exchange, she seemed honestly surprised at my hard questions with specific examples regarding certain formative cases for the EFF. She also seemed surprised that I was not 100% in favor of EFF, like a sports team fan. I don't know her title but it seemed like she was some kind of senior person there. edit reflecting on it, I was probably strident in questioning the EFF in that unexpected exchange. As a mannered person her outward bemusement might have been a learned behavioral response practiced among attorneys. Speaking of attorneys, I had some interaction with Lee Tien long ago. A deep thinker, caring and capable person is my impression from that time, so, much respect there. It is probably my own disappointment in the 2022 state-of-affairs of privacy and the marketplace that fuels criticisms of EFF from me. Obviously it is a hard road to walk in the shoes of the EFF daily.
- fragmede 4y ago> They should be recommending totally eschewing social media That’s just not realistic. You want an EFF that’s more out of touch with reality, that’s how you get there…
- 0daystock 4y agoIt's already out of touch with reality. Expecting privacy - in any form - from a device rooted by a behavioral management company is juicing a stone.
- mrkramer 4y agoWhere is Lina Khan now?
- ramoz 4y ago> The Fourth Amendment prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures, and it requires particularity in warrants. A lot of breath wasted for the simple context that could’ve helped a reader decide if the government is actively surveying US citizens. 1. They’re not.monitoring immigration flow as well as battlefield telemetry is nothing new. 2. Half these products suck, like babelstreet 3. Funny how this distracts from the fact that the data does exist & it’s clear where it comes from.
