Calling for Antitrust Reform
- musicale 4y agoAmerican Innovation and Choice Online Act (AICOA): >an average market capitalization greater than $550,000,000,000 So Apple/Microsoft/Google/Amazon (and Tesla and Berkshire Hathaway I guess) > has at least 1,000,000,000 worldwide monthly active users on the online platform and Facebook, but not Twitter (not enough users) or TikTok/WeChat (not US companies) > does not include a person that— (i) is a clear national security risk; or (ii) is controlled by the Government of the People’s Republic of China Well then.
- musicale 4y ago> We understand that the bill sponsors intend AICOA to regulate only gatekeeper companies and their controlled products. It is not intended to regulate or impact the agreements or product offerings of non-regulated independent companies like Mozilla that partner with gatekeepers for critical services I wouldn't be so sure about that. Paying Mozilla to keep Google as Firefox's default search engine clearly helps to maintain Google's search dominance. (Unfortunately, losing Google's search engine bribe would be the final nail in Mozilla's coffin.) That being said, it seems that by respectively bundling/preinstalling Safari and Chrome, Apple and Google are achieving something similar to what got Microsoft in trouble: leveraging their dominant platform(s) to maintain browser dominance.
