I think all these pursuits for AI, even weak AI, is foolish. Mostly because we've yet to fully utilize computers. For example, as a programmer I'm mostly focused on how to tell a computer through primitive instructions to do some kind of work. Rarely do I find myself making use of constraints or goals or any kind of logic based formalisms. Sure, we got some functional programming features in most languages, but we don't have anything close to high level constraint or goal oriented programming yet. These were things that I believe computer scientists were focused on in the 1970s but some how these concerns were sidelined for pipe dreams of AI. It's an odd world we live in that we're basically in the Bronze Age of Computing while thinking up flying machines (AI) that belong to a far more advanced age.
