Ask HN: Anybody know if Apple M1 chip support iGPU passthrough?
Does anybody know if Apple M1 chip supports iGPU passthrough (like Intel GVT-g.. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_GVT-g) or sharing with a virtual machine?
Last year I did a hobby project on my Intel MacBook where I passed through the shared iGPU to a windows VM running on Linux and it worked very well with minimal performance penalty after full optimizations. I don't even know if AMD supports this feature, but would Apple M1 support it? Thanks
- matt321 4y agoWindows and Linux support Intels iGPU. I don't believe that either supports the M1 gpu since Apple certainly does not support those OSes on their hardware.
- runjake 4y agoNo, it doesn't. The support isn't there for other OSes (yet). You won't be able to do viable GPU pass-through for quite some time and even then, it will not work like you think.
- garaetjjte 4y agoIt does, macOS guests have access to the paravirtualized Metal device.
- clintonwoo 4y agoNice this sounds optimistic, so I'm guessing it must be some kind of hardware capability that could be harnessed in Linux some day in the future? Any idea if there's any docs about this M1 passthrough capability existing? I'll try and have a look
