Treat work as normal labor. Don’t expect joy from work.
Try to be less involved. But still efficient, just the bare minimum. It’s just a contract after all.
Invest the money you get from your labor in a stable social life. Healthy life style.
Spend the free time you’re left with practicing your hobbies. It can still be coding. But something you’re excited about.
- dominotw 4y ago> It can still be coding. But something you’re excited about. Problem is that you cannot do anything significant or at scale on your own. Writing POC or some fun code on the weekends isn't satisfying as collaborating with group of people and accomplishing something worthwhile. Sure you can find an OS project but that requires significant time investment to make any major contributions and you likely have the same frustrations with it that made your original job un-fun.
- yadoomerta 4y agoI feel this so much. It seems like the whole tech industry is just sick. Nobody is making anything worthwhile. Its just all ad-tech or scummy subscription plans, or other new and exciting ways to "extract" the "value" out of the world. And anything I make myself is such a minor drop in the bucket that there's no way to meaningfully contribute to anything through software.
- LouisSayers 4y agoIt's probably good to highlight the words "significant" and "major contribution" here. As someone that's working full time on their own thing - I agree it is extremely difficult to do something major part time (let alone full time!!) When it comes to coding. So I'd flip the script here and ask: does it need to be significant? If the aim is to do something enjoyable, then maybe cut yourself some slack. Find joy in learning, or joy in helping a cause. Don't worry if you feel it's small. Do it for you. Also, say no to things that overextend you or divert you from your mission of enjoying your hobby.
- dominotw 4y agono it doesn't need to be but hard to keep the momentum and commitment going if you are a one man team working on something on the side. Having a team lets you validate your ideas, inspire new ideas and motivate you when you to keep the project going when there are setbacks.
- freecodyx 4y agoWell, in my case. I realized that i find my day to day job boring and there is still little joy. Mainly because i don’t feel challenged. I know how to do it so what i see is that how much effort is needed to accomplish. What i do is that i invest my free time/ no commitments, in things harder than my current skills allow me to achieve. And thankfully i do find joy in doing that. In my case is just joy not making something big and successful
