I'm not sure if it counts as burnout, but I've had my share of trying work situations, some of which pushed me into melancholy. Although the following may not apply to everyone, I believe it does in my case. My takeaways: unless it's your own firm, don't get too involved or emotionally immersed in your work; it's usually just a contract of labour for money.
Also, I have a tendency to hold out hope that things will turn out okay in the end, even when most people have gone on. It never ends well, and I'm still trying to recognize when a change is necessary...
