- egypturnash 4y agoAll Jazz is encoding secret messages, you are simply not hip enough to decode them.
- xcambar 4y agoJoke aside, my jazz musicians friends introduced me to the world of Jazz standards and how much of Jazz is about stretching these standards and hiding them in new pieces. As much respect as I have for Jazz and jazz enthusiasts and Jazz practitioners, it really is a lot about jargon and entre-soi and self-reference. Or so I've been told.
- ghostpepper 4y agoA good way to "understand" jazz for a newcomer IMHO is to listen to some non-jazz versions of those standards. A good example is the song Autumn Leaves. Listen to Frank Sinatra's stripped-down, straightforward version, and then listen to a jazz version (I recommend Bill Evans'). You'll hear bits and pieces of the original melody, interrupted by minutes of improvisation and embellishment, but it's still the same song underneath.
