This LaMDA story reminds me of another article I found last year about a man who fed his deceased girlfriend's chats to GPT3 [1] and believed the system was giving the answers she would have. Both articles rely on the operators taking the smallest amount of evidence and ignoring everything else, which I guess is what this article calls "the gullibility gap" (awful name).
Getting your audience to do the heavy lifting for you is a great trick. If it works for theater and video games, I don't see why it shouldn't work for tech too. Just don't call it "sentience".

- jonathankoren 4y agoSadly, this is the very inspiration of Replika. https://replika.com/about/story https://replika.com/about/story How this company has remained an ongoing concern for 5 or 6 years, I’ll never understand.
- jimhi 4y agoI used Replika in their first few months. They were a chatbot for restaurant recommendations in SF believe it or not. Their machine learning and language processing at the time was some of the best. They have since pivoted a ton clearly
- jonathankoren 4y agoYeah, that’s when I heard of it too. It was such a weird pivot. Given that they’re pretty much the only consumer indie chat bot left (RIP Ozlo), it was apparently a successful one.
- nootropicat 4y agoPeople know you can't pay a human to love you, but it's in principle possible to make an AI that loves you, assuming a human level AI exists.
- jonathankoren 4y agoI think you’re vastly over estimating the technological complexity needed when you have a motivated audience. Just look at the people that buy RealDolls.
- nootropicat 4y agoAs AIs become more lifelike the pool of humans that consider it enough grows. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if relationships with human level AI won't dominate eventually.
- pyuser583 4y ago> fed his deceased girlfriend's chats to GPT3 [1] and believed the system was giving the answers she would have Isn’t that what AI does? Repeats back what it’s “heard?”
- deaddodo 4y agoNo, and that’s precisely the point. A “true AI” would have an independent intelligence and the ability to form self-referential thoughts. Regurgitating statistically sound data in an intelligent-seeming manner is not what these researchers are referring to when they refer to “AI”.
