How much of this is a problem in practice when Unity, etc. abstract away all of those API differences these days? What's preventing a cross-platform game developer from targetting the Mac?
- jquery 4y agoAll I know is 90% of my steam gaming library won’t run on my MacBook Pro, including recent releases. I won’t be getting the M1 or the M2 or anything like that until Apple computers at least have Linux-tier support for games.
- noirbot 4y agoPretty sure some of that is because of Apple's enforced code signing? I had some games that used to run on OS X, but later added content/patches/expansions just never came to OS X because the devs didn't want to bother jumping through the hoops needed. That was even before the ARM transition.

- musicale 4y agoCatalina's 32-bit apocalypse also wasn't good for macOS games on Steam. Apple Silicon complicates things further, though some x86 games are actually playable under Rosetta2. The closest thing to Proton on macOS is CrossOver, but it's pretty limited atm.
