Android and Chrome are basically inescapable to everyone who chooses the 80% over ~Apple's 20% for mobile and web development. Windows is similar for desktop developers and has an equal lack of thrill.
I think large "industry standard" communities are actually made up of hard to understand fragmented groups that kind of assume any conference topic is for one of the other fragments.
- swatcoder 4y agoRelevant to this conversation, my experience is that Apple’s market tends to more cohesively track new products while Android and PC markets tend to be extremely fragmented with lots of users still dangling on the tail — often because they’re either budget users or enterprise managed and subject to slow upgrade patterns. Unless my Android app has a demographic that’s biased heavily towards flagship phones, newly announced OS and ecosystem features just won’t be important to me for a while. Meanwhile, I’m pretty sure the majority of my iOS users will be on iOS 16 by end of year, and a huge share more by next fall. So being attentive to what iOS 16 means for my app is more immediately important.
