When I see TV interviews with the average citizen, I'm not sure if there's anything everyone knows.

How do I determine if someone is an average citizen? And if there is no way for me to determine such, in what way is the phrase “average citizen” meaningful?

choosing people by random should yield the average, right?

Is this just you defining “average person” as someone chosen randomly?
