I read the title and immediately agreed, but i had misinterpreted "short-sightedness" as the inability to consider the long-term effects of our choices and habits, at least to the effect of making positive changes, rather than the ocular deficiency.
- tharne 4y ago> I read the title and immediately agreed, but i had misinterpreted "short-sightedness" as the inability to consider the long-term effects of our choices and habits I had the exact same reaction, and was genuinely surprised when I clicked through.
- mathgeek 4y agoFirst I have ever encountered the term used in this context. Have always understood it to be near-sightedness, but that may just be cultural.
- jacobolus 4y agoShort-sighted, near-sighted, and myopic mean the same thing. Both short-sighted and myopic are often used figuratively (to mean acting on short-term interests without considering long-term effects) while near-sighted seldom is.
- xiamx 4y agoSame. And opening the page and seeing that it talks about myopia is a surprise
- productk 4y agoThe same, only reason I clicked the link.

- DharmaPolice 4y agoThe Economist is a British publication and in the UK we use "shortsighted" more than "nearsighted" E.g. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/short-sightedness/ https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/short-sightedness/
- qiskit 4y agoDon't care. It's a global publication. America sets the standard in english so use the standard. That goes for spelling 'favor/labor/etc' correctly.
- dragonwriter 4y ago> I guess the geniuses at the economist don't know the difference between being shortsighted and being nearsighted It's funny when people who speak American mock the British for speaking English instead.
- lemoncucumber 4y agoHow myopic of you
- higgins 4y agoStrategic title to get more clicks
- baron816 4y agoThe Economist has another article this week that's basically about that: https://www.economist.com/united-states/2022/06/09/miamis-submarine-future https://www.economist.com/united-states/2022/06/09/miamis-su.... It's about Miami and how local, county, State, and Federal governments are just totally incapable of planning long term for climate change.
