It'll generally work for a few metres with Cat5e, but I think it's always been too problematic to be officially supported. Though looking around it seems some manufacturers do say it'll work? It works fine over Cat6 yeah, but if you've not got that deployed then 2.5Gb or 5Gb is a good step up from 1Gb.
