Wild-ass guess
- chrisseaton 4y agoWild-ass guess guess?
- fragmede 4y agoYes, like when people say PIN number or ATM machine. Or HIV virus or LCD display. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAS_syndrome https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAS_syndrome
- seanhunter 4y agoOr, as recently, PUBG Battlegrounds, which reuses 2 letters from the ititialism.
- kzrdude 4y agoAre there iterated versions of that?
- willismichael 4y agoJWT token
- tsimionescu 4y agoThis is not a good example - JWT is the name of a format, not of the token stored in that format. JWT token just means "token in JWT format". Saying "a JWT" is in fact more dubious, like saying "an SQL" instead of "an SQL string".
- Someone 4y agohttps://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc7519 https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc7519 disagrees: Abstract JSON Web Token (JWT) is a compact, URL-safe means of representing claims to be transferred between two parties. The claims in a JWT are encoded as a JSON object that is used as the payload of a JSON Web Signature (JWS) structure or as the plaintext of a JSON Web Encryption (JWE) structure, enabling the claims to be digitally signed or integrity protected with a Message Authentication Code (MAC) and/or encrypted.
- tsimionescu 4y agoEven the quoted fragment is a bit debatable - while the standard does commonly use "JWT" to mean a particular token, the very first sentence is only grammatical if we take JWT to be the name of the standard/format. Otherwise, it's missing an article - it should have been "*A* JSON Web Token (JWT) is [...]" if it were consistently used to refer to individual tokens, not the collective format.
- chrisseaton 4y ago> like saying "an SQL" An SQL is an implementation of the System Query Language isn’t it? Like MySQL, or MSSQL.
- gboone 4y agoSSD drive
- tsimionescu 4y agoHonestly I don't think these are as often wrong as some people think. While PIN and ATM work well even when articulated (please input the PIN, the ATM is broken), others don't ("the HIV has killed millions"). LCD is more on the fence for me. Other common examples that don't sound that wrong to me are "the IP/TCP/... protocol". For a different reason, I also don't think "this API expects a JWT token" is redundant: JWT is the name of a standard, so the phrase should be parsed as "the API expects a token in JSON Web Token format".
