I'm renting a 2 BR/1 BA house for $1300 with a backyard and views of nature, a mile from a hiking trailhead. In a college town between Austin and San Antonio. For the same price, I could get a small, mediocre 1 BR/1 BA apartment in Austin with views of... another apartment, and a wall. In San Jose or Seattle, I imagine I'd get just a bedroom for $1300.
