The Discarnates: Thomas Carlyle in the Spirit-World (1920)
- nestorD 4y agoNote that mediums being possessed by dead people and writing books in their name was common during spiritualism's heyday and is still a thing in Brazil where spiritualism and mediums are still going strong. https://johnryle.com/?article=dictation-from-the-dead https://johnryle.com/?article=dictation-from-the-dead
- dr_dshiv 4y agoI’m writing a paper about soul in design (no one wants a soulless design, right?), so I’ve been nerding out on the concepts recently. First, it seems that soul is more easily rationalized as a shared phenomenon rather than a uniquely individual one. One can view their soul as an accretion of all the “soul stuff” they’ve encountered over the years. Meaning, our individual soul is really based on the influence of all the people we know, etc. If you have shared souls, then reincarnation is mundane: every time you engage someone, you are mutually reincarnating each other’s soul-material. Classically, soul was not the same as consciousness or sensation. Soul was found in the world of eternal immaterial forms; soul plus body was required for conscious experience or sensation to take place. The earliest attestation of this view was Philolaus, the Pythagorean.
