Many years ago, a friend of mine who was born and raised in Mexico told me he was taking a road trip to visit his family in "MEH-hee-coh" and stopping on the way to visit friends in "LOSS AN-juh-luhs".
I got curious and asked him why he didn't call it "lohs ON-guh-leeze".
(My phonetic spellings don't do justice to the subtleties, but should give the general idea.)
He was a good friend, so I knew he wouldn't mind the question.
He explained, "Los Angeles is a US city, so I pronounce it in English. Mexico is where I grew up, so I pronounce it in Spanish."
