You Can't Trust Instagram
- dontbenebby 4y agoI deleted FB, then later Instagram, but I had odd bugs like people from my friends list who didn't get an opt in to my private instagram causing notifications. (I specifically did not invite that person to view my instagram, and delete my facebook, then she pops up in my instagram notifications? Weird and unwelcome). Also I was told anyone who's a friend on either counts as a foreign connection for the SF-86, but I probably won't be filling one of those out anytime soon. Anyways, if you choose to use it, be mindful that rhetoric about Tik Tok being an app that beams your data to the Chinese aside, Facebook has for years been very cozy with the PRC, so it makes a ton of sense they have these weirdly unfriendly policies because the people who make them know they get to define reality for the rest of us.
- Anunayj 4y agoFor people who are in a situation like this (account suspended, hacked, inaccessible) and are a resident of the EU (or willing to be pretending to be one), I would highly suggest asking for your information under GDPR. I was in a similar situation where my Instagram account was suspended and Instagram asked for my phone number so they could "reconsider" my suspension. I instead opted to do a data access request, and they just unsuspended my account after a little bit of back and forth. The process turned out to be a bit annoying so I'll list what I did: 1. Visit https://help.instagram.com/contact/505535973176353 https://help.instagram.com/contact/505535973176353, Select "Data Access" as request. 2. Select "I don’t have an Instagram account and I want to access my data", Now this step is weird, but any attempts by me so far using the "I have a instagram account" option ended up with me getting a automated email telling me how to download my data by logging in. 3. Select a EU country of residence, funny thing, Instagram won't show you any EU countries in this list if your IP does not appear to be from EU, use a VPN if needed. 4. The first one or two emails you receive now will be completely automated, and would probably ask for for your instagram account/email and data you want, followed by a automated response on how to download data by logging in, keep replying with your data access request. Consult one of those GDPR data request format sites out there if needed. At the last step, instead of sending my data by email or something, they just opted to restoring my access to my account. I'm not saying this is a solution, but it doesn't hurt to try.
