My wife used to do research under a woman at University of Texas who developed the original mRNA vaccine technology that Moderna uses. My wife and I were super skeptical that the mRNA vaccines would be safe enough with low rates of "off-target" effects (cause impactful unintended protein synthesis). So she followed the vaccine development very closely and attended (online) a number of talks that this researcher put on during the beginning of the pandemic. We also waited quite a bit longer than our peers to get vaccinated and specifically chose Moderna over Pfizer because it had much fewer off-target effects.
Eventually we were able to determine that the mRNA vaccine did actually appear to be safe, and we were able to stop strictly quarantining.
My wife says the relevant scientific community were aware of prion-like domains early on in vaccine development and took this into account when designing the Moderna vaccine. So she feels its unlikely that the spike protein which the mRNA vaccines cause to be generated would themselves act as harmful prions.
