All Smartphones Must Use the Same Charger by 2024 Says EU, UK Will Not Follow
- necovek 4y agoI understand the desire to reduce e-waste, but this is just silly (and I don't even use any of the Apple devices, and only get devices which do have USB-C charging). USB-C ports seem flimsy, and half the cables either don't go all the way in or pull out easily: they never instill confidence. And let's not get started on how do you tell what a particular USB-C cable supports (eg. what levels of PD, what levels of USB, alt-DP or not, TB3 or not...)! How are we going to get a better port developed if you can't sell it? Can we just prescribe that chargers can't be included with mobile phones instead?
- mytailorisrich 4y agoUK will not follow in making it mandatory but will get the same chargers and USB-C ports as everyone else... Note that Northern Ireland will in any case have to follow EU rules so this will be mandatory in that part of the UK.
- john_the_writer 4y agoNever going to happen.. 1.5 years.. Those phones would have to be in development now.. And aren't the power adaptors adaptive to the phones they're built for? A "universal" charger would have to be adaptive, and respond to API's from the phone. And that charger would also have to be forward compatible. Able to predict battery charging tech that hasn't been invented yet.
- mytailorisrich 4y agoIt's actually only the charging port. So all new devices must have an USB-C charging port from autumn 2024, laptops get an extra 40 months. This schedule is no big deal for manufacturers who have most likely been consulted (and/or who lobbied).
