Professional classical musician here.
Have you considered learning to play an instrument and taking some basic music lessons on that instrument? This could give you the kind of practice at recognizing musical structures that you need to become more proficient in hearing them at speed. Since you'd learn musical notation as part of this, you'd also have a new visual/mental framework that might connect up the wires in your brain a bit better for performance in other contexts, too, like dancing.
- Leftium 4y agoI took piano lessons for over two years. Played at recitals, etc. Yet I never really grokked basic musical concepts like the "1" beat. I knew music was broken down into measures and has different time signature, but I never truly understood why the entire time I learned piano. It seems like other people just "get" these concepts, but I don't understand unless it's explicitly explained to me. Perhaps now that I have a better understanding from learning dance, learning an instrument would be more helpful? I've also heard learning tap dance can really help.
