Larry Ellison’s Lanai Isn’t for You–Or the People Who Live There
- ArtWomb 4y agoKudos to BB on some fascinating local reportage. I just wish Larry Ellison sat down for the interview! Reading about SV Billionaires' sustainability plans for their Hawaiian islands is right out of Aldous Huxley or J G Ballard ;)
- dralley 4y ago"Don't anthropomorphize the lawnmower." edit: Perhaps Larry took this as advice. In which case - Larry, please treat your lawnmower as a human being.
- bpiche 4y agoIf this wasn’t a funny variation on immanetizing the eschaton..
- ars 4y agoThis article tries to pain a bleak picture, but with only a single house available for sale, and everyone anxiously waiting for the apartment complex to be finished, it seems the people are voting with the feet to stay. I know it's their home, and it's hard to leave, but if it was really that bad, some would, so I suspect the article is not entirely accurate.
- tmnvix 4y agoIt takes a lot to motivate people to leave their family and community behind.
- dralley 4y agoEspecially when it's an island, and moving is therefore 100x more of an endeavor than renting a U-Haul for a few days.
- me_smith 4y agoBut some have left: > “A handful of young families recently moved away, including Palumbo, who left during the pandemic. Those who’ve left tend to say they made the decision in part because even compared with a few years ago, the island didn’t feel like home anymore.“ There is extra friction to leave a whole island. They can’t just pack up their stuff, stick it in a car and drive far, far away. Not to mention leaving family, friends and community they will have to buy a plane or boat ticket to see again. I agree there are usually multiple sides to a story and this one definitely leans anti-Ellison with an obvious negative slant from the locals. The article does mention locals think it could have been worse. But I would probably be a little upset if a billionaire buys up all the land around me and drives away small local businesses and under delivers on his promises to the community.
