The Concept of Classical Herd Immunity May Not Apply to Covid-19
- codefreeordie 4y agoThey really are trying so hard to milk this thing for all it's worth. I guess it's all they have left.
- ggm 4y agoSo.. what happened with Spanish flu: it persists as a virus at varying degrees of lethality. We've lost anywhere between 10 to 20 per 100,000 head to flu, since 1918 depending on the variant, immunisation and the weather. But the big assumption is that C19 mutates to be more .. benign. In a "fitness" sense, that which does not kill us grows strong. So its a better survival strategy and you'd think mutations to survive are more likely, but nothing is certain (not an epidemiologist or a virologist but sometimes a computer scientist)
- techdragon 4y agoThis is not a new concept. You don’t see herd immunity in endemic diseases. If over time diseases can become endemic, obviously there are paths from breakout pandemic spread that lead to persistent endemic infection states. I really expected better from the NIH, and the pandemic had been an eye opener for me as to how influenced by political winds they truly are.
