I have happy memories of learning how to program machine code on a ZX-Spectrum. I was 11 years old, I had no access to the internet, and I didn’t know anybody who could help me figure it out. All I had was a small book “Programming Machine Code on the ZX-Spectrum” that my parents got me for Christmas. But it was enough to figure it out. I didn’t have an assembler so I manually translated hand written assembler code to binary. Drawing black horizontal lines on the display, without crashing, was a major breakthrough for me :) I still have the book.
