Smarter Than a Smart TV (Raspberry Pi Inside) – Jeff Geerling
- SxC97 4y agoI figured this would be interesting to the HN crowd that has been looking for a 'dumb TV'.
- Koshkin 4y agoA-and… Why does this display need a Raspberry Pi inside it, again?
- milesvp 4y agoIt's a commercial display. Not a TV. if you want it to display something, you need to attach something that provides output. There's is a very common thread here on HN talking about people wanting to support dumb displays, displays that don't expect you to enter IP addresses before they will even finish first time setups. This 55inch NEC display looks like it retails for a little over $2kUSD. https://www.sharpnecdisplays.us/products/displays/ma551 https://www.sharpnecdisplays.us/products/displays/ma551
- khimaros 4y agothis one linked from the video seems to be a bit cheaper at $1659: https://www.sharpnecdisplays.us/products/displays/m551 https://www.sharpnecdisplays.us/products/displays/m551 i'm not clear on all differences between these two displays, but it looks like the one you linked is U-IPS with a wider color temperature range.
- nsonha 4y agosounds like their question is "why does a dumb display needs a Pi"
- mdmglr 4y agoInteresting hardware and very informative video. The display is $1,659 and the Pi module is $200. I’ve never bought a TV over $500 and never will. So definitely not for me. I have 3 4k Roku TV’s in my house and found them to be fine performance wise, have minimal ads and just work. Also the Roku iPhone app can be used as a remote.
