I think the biggest reason to look forward to the Merge is that it might noticeably reduce the number of people complaining about how much energy is "wasted" by cryptocurrencies (where "wasted" means "used for something I don't think is valuable"). On the other hand, it might increase the number of times people complain that proof-of-stake is just a codified form of oligarchy, but I don't know what testable predictions either side of that debate would be willing to make, or on what timelines they might be proven right.
