hahaha - the moon will get wireless before rural america gets it! hahaha!
- atlasunshrugged 4y agoI mean, the U.S. has dropped $60 billion or so on rural and underserved wireless projects in the last few years, if those folks aren't networked in the next years they never will be.
- rozap 4y agoI live 5 minutes from a grocery store, 10 minutes from a town of 50k people. Hardly remote by US standards. There is no cell coverage, and the only internet option plugs into a phone jack. From where I'm sitting, that spending didn't translate into much. Edit: realized you were speaking in future tense. So I guess we'll see how it shakes out.
- google234123 4y ago50k is a lot of people, I'm surprised. At least when I've been doing long trips across the US, I've seen billboards adverting fiber internet in a lot of the tiny towns around the interstates.
- tluyben2 4y agoJikes, you would think that would easier to fix; in my rural EU village of a few 100 people there has been fiber for a while now and that's quite high up in the mountains with, otherwise, bad infrastructure (I didn't think they would ever get there 10 years ago). From the village they use copper & radio to transfer it to all the houses in the mountains. And cell coverage is everywhere anyway (that's more because of the mountains & hills; easy to put antenna's on all the peaks which reach everywhere). Guess that town must be really far from everything maybe on flat land?
- zbrozek 4y agoI live within a 15 minute drive of both Google's and Apple's headquarters but was in the same situation - no broadband available. I organized my neighbors, we trenched, laid fiber, and now we all have 10g/10g service.
- rozap 4y agoHow many people did you need to wrangle to get this to happen? I saw a Comcast truck driving down my street a few months ago. I chased him down and asked if they were putting in broadband, and he said "No, I'm just checking the line levels, but you are the fourth person on this street today to chase me down and ask me the same question..."
- zbrozek 4y ago22 parcels passed, 15 takers for service. Took us about 6-8 months.
- whoomp12342 4y agothis site of all places should know that money spent in tech does not necissarily mean progress

- lelandfe 4y agoAnd they just approved $10b more[0]. Unfortunately ISPs have a habit of taking that money and running off with it, and Ajit Pai was a pretty poor steward of the process. - google234123 4y agoThe article you link doesn't support your second, more interesting assertion.
- tristor 4y agoWell... it would help if AT&T didn't squander that money and actually used it as promised.

- dane-pgp 4y agoIt's worth considering the maximum number of subscribers per cell of Starlink coverage, and how big the cells are.[0] TL;DR "if everyone in your area lives on 311 acre lots, then you should be good." - google234123 4y agoThis still could be a game changer for the most isolated that would be last on the list for internet upgrades. Though I don't thihnk Starlink has a way to prioritize those people rather than those with fiber internet at their house.
- erikpukinskis 4y ago> the most isolated > I don't think Starlink has a way to prioritize those people They sort of do... I believe the waitlist is based at least partly on geographic demand. So if you are in an isolated area there's not a ton of demand and you'll jump to the top of the list. I'm on Starlink right now, in a fairly isolated area. Not 300 acre lots but maybe 10 acres if you average it out with open space. We got our dish within a few weeks of ordering last February. Now people in my area are on a waitlist.
- umeshunni 4y agoThe population density of the moon will probably be higher than rural America at that point.
