Salaries within an industry, like software or electrical engineering, will depend largely upon supply and demand.
An interesting question might be “are the changes in the economy and technology going to affect the demand for software developers?”
I am guessing—-and it’s purely a guess—-that we are near or just beyond the peak demand for software development. We saw a similar thing happen in mechanical engineering and then electrical engineering in the 20th century. Human software development will likely follow the same course.
The economy in my opinion will only be the catalyst for change. I think that a recession will tend to push businesses to find less expensive ways to develop and maintain code.
Again, this is all just opinion based on a macro understanding of the current state of software and experience in business and engineering as a basis for my perspective.
I will spend some time researching this a bit more and perhaps I can find some good backup data for my intuition that I can post here.
