  Because the article, which is mostly an excerpt from Kertzer's forthcoming book (which I will buy), makes the case that Pius XII (the Pope during most of the Nazi period) didn't do enough to oppose Nazism.

    Regardless of what he did, I think it's clear that his interests were exclusively to protect the church. The fact that years prior he was part of a commission or whatever doesn't change that
