Is there really that much advantage to a ship being autonomous? I have absolutely no idea but let's say a ship has a crew of 100 and has 100 million in cargo.

I have absolutely no idea but let's say a ship has a crew of 100 and has 100 million in cargo. It just doesn't seem like like crew is the big bottle neck here.
And I doubt autonomous means there aren't still a whole bunch of people required on that ship
- Kon-Peki 4y agoAnother article [1] suggests that the very largest container ships have a crew of around 25. Reading between the lines, it seems that the ship's crew is a relatively small portion of the total cost of shipping a container. Perhaps instead of eliminating labor costs on the largest of ships, this type of feature enables much smaller ships to be cost-competitive. What I would be worried about is that reducing or eliminating human crew could encourage shippers to take more risky routes. I would also expect these ships to be followed and probed for weaknesses in their AI. [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31660571 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31660571
- dzhiurgis 4y agoPerhaps it's to increase safety. Tons of helmsmen fail to maintain basic lookout for other boats or hazards. Crews already are very busy - most of it is around maintenance.
