Related is Moravec’s paradox: computers today are very good at reasoning tasks brains find difficult (e.g. complex calculations), but terrible at tasks our brains do subconsciously (e.g. sensorimotor skills). As Moravec himself wrote, “it is comparatively easy to make computers exhibit adult level performance on intelligence tests or playing checkers, and difficult or impossible to give them the skills of a one-year-old when it comes to perception and mobility.”
- cgrealy 4y agoAs a layperson in AI, that makes total sense. Programs are things humans invented and can reason about. Even complex ML agents ultimately derive from concepts humans came up with. So it stands to reason we can make them do things that are complicated but understood. Whereas we really only barely understand sensorimotor skills, so trying to invent a machine to do that is doubly difficult.
