I'm teaching middle schoolers using Makeblock (https://www.makeblock.com/ https://www.makeblock.com/) products and I am completely blown away by how accessible these things are. Once the kids have built and programmed (using Scratch, Python, or C++) the bot out of the box, you can add RJ25 adapters which allow you to connect different electronics (in my case lasers, servos, and laser detectors).
