Depends on the school culture, the professor teaching, the particular language being used... there are a lot of factors! I did both my undergraduate and MS in the past decade, worked in academic research for a few years, and am currently in a PhD program. At the schools I've been at and schools I know well due to friends/collaborators, I think what I said still tends to be true for mandatory ("core") classes. You are right, however, that students who choose to take an elective in a statically typed functional language are probably more likely to come away with a healthier relationship with their compilers, but this is only a portion of all students.
