Nitpicking critique: The excessive JPEG compression used for the diagrams is really distracting. I normally wouldn't mind it but this article is literally about presenting data with images. The green rectangle in the "with borders" diagram has such severe ringing artifacts that I thought it was part of the intentional design at first. Since there are very few colors in each diagram, PNG should result in even smaller file sizes while looking way better.
- dotancohen 4y agoOn my desktop I do not see such artifacts. Are you on mobile? It is possible that your provider is recompressing images to save bandwidth.
- jjcm 4y agoIt's likely the site itself, as the .jpg extension is referenced in the html. The screenshots should be pngs, not jpgs. Weirdly the author is using a mix of both - it could be that their site automatically encodes larger images as jpgs. The full res jpg versions are heavy with artifacts.
- Liquid_Fire 4y ago> It is possible that your provider is recompressing images to save bandwidth. With the ubiquity of HTTPS nowadays, I don't think doing this is very feasible.
- samplatt 4y agoHug of death resulting in requirement for smaller pictures maybe?
