American Tech Leaves China, but What Will Stay?
- simonblack 4y agoFor every LinkedIn and Airbnb, there are two or three local alternatives with better products and services that cater better to domestic Chinese consumers anyways. American Tech is no longer necessary. The excerpt above explains the whole situation in just one sentence. American Tech will be squeezed out of China by Chinese Tech, just like British Tech was squeezed out of Britain by US Tech, and European Tech was squeezed out of Europe by US tech. There is no 'Natural Law' that says the World has to use US hardware and software, like the Intel-Windows-Google-Android environments, forever. In coming years the World is just as likely to change over to Chinese, Korean or Japanese hardware and software environments.
- igravious 4y agoMy guess is that the "West" has been king of the high-tech hill for so long that even for those of us who aren't blinkered and blinded by Western-centrism/Western-chauvinism (or tbh just plain parochialism or tribalism) it is difficult to imagine a multi-polar high-tech world. Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea are integrated into the Western world and, dare I say, feel Western in their outlook/orientation: capitalist, liberal, parliamentary democracies with free and fair elections fwiw. But, clearly, one cannot say the same about mainland China in the last instance. And because m. China has historically been self-reliant, has a massive population (equal to the US, Europe, Japan, Taiwan, and S. Korea combined, surely), has a history of innovation and trade, etc. … the so-called "West" sees itself at an impasse. Fun times.
