This works really well (for me at least) when translated to music. I find that if I listen to music at work with English lyrics, sometimes I end up paying more attention to the music than the work. Listening to good music in a language I don't understand (e.g. Italian opera) allows me to hear the vocals without my brain putting any effort into understanding. In essence, the vocals become just like any other instrument while still being more aesthetically pleasing (in my opinion) than pure instrumental symphony.
Of course music in languages that aren't real (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wOJAErCvVhs https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wOJAErCvVhs) or music with vocalization but no words (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0tDpoLXD3Js https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0tDpoLXD3Js) has the same effect, but it's less commom to find that outside video game / fantasy soundtracks.
