- dchuk 4y agoAnybody know what that MagSafe clip is they’re using to hold the phone to the top of the MacBook?
- SxC97 4y agoIt’s a new product, designed in partnership with Belkin, slated for release later this year. Price currently unknown.
- umeshunni 4y ago$199.99 for the iClip /s
- reiichiroh 4y agoTen 1 design had one called a Mountie+
- tillcarlos 4y agoI actually had something similar made in a small shop in vietnam in 2016. Back then I had to record the video and merge it later. I should dig it out again. It was a simple bent plastic plate. Worked like a charm for my 7 plus.
- TheJoeMan 4y agoNot many discussing the “continuity camera” as why the 720p builtin is okay. Also the tech to merge the “desktop” view distortion-corrected seems pretty cool.
- m1keil 4y agoStage manager looks like another wasted opportunity. All that wasted space...
- cltsang 4y agoAt the end of the day, this is optional and hidden by default. Compared to command + tab or exposé, this approach is more visual and direct, which seems to be a better fit for a form factor that offers much more screen real estate. I guess this is the cost Apple is willing to pay to ease mac and ipad users into reality OS.
- wtallis 4y agoStage manager doesn't look to me like a replacement for cmd+tab or exposé, but rather a more obvious and in your face replacement for Spaces (multiple desktops).
- chrisjc 4y agoStill a little confused with Stage Manager, but thinking about it as a replacement/enhancement for Spaces makes it seem a lot more interesting and useful. Even though Spaces is an awesome idea, I find it very inconvenient to use even with 4-finger swiping. Perhaps it's the lack of visual cues that is the issue for me. And I find that most of the left/right real-estate on my screen wasted anyways, so this might be something I can actually use.
- twalichiewicz 4y agoHaving played around with Stage Manager today, the best way I would describe it is "Spaces within Spaces". I didn't find turning it on very intuitive, but otherwise I think it's pretty clever. I already rely on Spaces for day-to-day organization (one per task) but each individual Space can become really hectic when you have several things to reference simultaneously (e.g. wikis, specs, Figma, Zeplin, screenshots, etc...). This cleaned everything up nicely without having to drag windows off the edges of the screen or risk minimizing / hiding and having them show up elsewhere. It really needs a way to magnify the little previews though, either by hovering to peek them or just magnification the way it works in the Dock.

- runlevel1 4y agoUgh. They're getting rid of the names under contacts in Messages.app? I'm sure it looks very nice when everyone has a custom icon, but I'd wager that's rarely the case in the real world. Apple's UIs communicate less and less with each release. It's like their design philosophy is "simple as possible and then just keep going." EDIT: Withdrawn. -- The photo in the Accessibility section shows it expanded. Why they didn't show it that way in the Messages section is beyond me.
- bunnyfoofoo 4y agoThey aren't. The icons appear without text when you shrink the sidebar. You can do the same thing in Big Sur now by decreasing the size of the left pane.
- reiichiroh 4y agoThe DTP program by Xerox was relatively easy for a kid to use.
- s__s 4y ago“Buddy Controller: Team up with a friend or care provider while gaming.” I’m so confused. Is this a politically correct way of saying parent or a feature designed for the sick / handicapped?
- dereg 4y ago> I’m so confused. Is this a politically correct way of saying parent or a feature designed for the sick / handicapped? From Apple: > Combine two controllers into one whenever you need support during a game. Link two wireless game controllers to drive a single player and get to the next level while playing your favorite games on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. First, did you really need to post this comment when you could have just pressed the "+" button to learn more? Second, what are you consuming on a daily basis that has you seeing basic feature copy as a litmus test on society's tolerance of "political correctness"? Whatever it is, I suggest consuming less of it. Buddy Controller is a more accurate term here because it can assist parents and caregivers (along with couples, friends, etc).
- ungamedplayer 4y ago> First, did you really need to post this comment when you could have just pressed the "+" button to learn more? I'm not op, but I get a little confused/annoyed about the mixed visual metaphors to "expand" + affords "me to add something" not to "expand", I expect the 'arrow to four corners' or the inverted caret. It could just be that I'm not cool anymore and the kids are down with new visual metaphors.
- dereg 4y agoYou have a point. Apple's use of the plus circle symbol violates its own Human Interface Guidelines at worst, contradicts itself at best. From the iOS Guidelines[0]: > If you create a button that looks like a common button that people know, ensure that the button behaves as they expect. For example, if you create a button that uses the plus.circle SF symbol, people expect it to let them add an item to the current view. Similarly, using the info.circle symbol in a button identifies it as an info button. From the Mac Guidelines[1]: > plus.circle - Displays additional detail for an item. - Mindwipe 4y agoThis seems a very poor effort. A huge increase in system requirements for modest changes. Stage Manager is hopeless. Like I have no idea what they were thinking. Metal continues to fiddle while developers for MacOS abandon it and the platform at scale. Meanwhile there's still no snapping for useful window management, virtualisation is an afterthought, there's still no Windows story for the M1/M2, the M1/M2 has terrible monitor support, the UI padding is still too high and there's no coherent gaming story (because that requires Apple to swallow their pride and accept Vulcan, or even better to built a Proton-esque compatibility layer and fix the core missing Metal features that make such a thing difficult today).
- sharikous 4y ago>> there's still no snapping for useful window management Yes, but a lot of utilities give that functionality >> virtualisation is an afterthought That's false, maybe you refer to containerization? Apple provides APIs to virtualize a system in 10 lines of code >> there's still no Windows story for the M1/M2 That's up to MS >> the M1/M2 has terrible monitor support Absolutely false. It's just that the base models are differentiated this way >>> the UI padding is still too high Yes but where do you find small puddings? It is a global design fad and even Linux distros adhered to this fashion >> and there's no coherent gaming story Macs are not marketed to gamers
- Mindwipe 4y ago> Yes, but a lot of utilities give that functionality This does not excuse core OS functionality being left to rot. > That's false, maybe you refer to containerization? Apple provides APIs to virtualize a system in 10 lines of code And not well. > That's up to MS Given the software story for the Mac is imploding, it is Apple's problem too. Apple could introduce a Proton-esque translation layer if they wanted to and make Macs significantly more useful machine at a stroke. > Absolutely false. It's just that the base models are differentiated this way This is unambiguously true - the M2 still cannot use multiple monitors correctly. > Yes but where do you find small puddings? It is a global design fad and even Linux distros adhered to this fashion Apple own their UI, Linux distro designers are not holding them at gunpoint. > Macs are not marketed to gamers They literally spent ten minutes of the keynote trying to market Macs to gamers.
- k4runa 4y agoI think stage manager is a great idea, I get motion sick sometimes from swiping between different desktops all the time.
- filchermcurr 4y agoHard to tell if you're joking or not, but if you aren't and weren't already aware, there's an accessibility option in Preferences -> Accessibility -> Display to reduce motion in animations. Might be helpful!
- 8fingerlouie 4y agoFinally a solution to shared family photo albums, and still no solution on how to back it up. I was seriously hoping for an integrated way to backup iCloud contents locally. Considering that most entry level macs has about 1/10 the storage of the large iCloud plans, synchronizing data locally is not a viable solution for backups.
