I'm confused. I think you're wrong on the substance and also contradicting yourself. Reporters do have a harder time than devs. There are a lot of solo devs, they're even exalted for their indie developer-dom. But there aren't exalted indie investigative reporters (if there even is such a thing as indie investigative reporters). Being a reporter does mean that there's a longer ladder to climb than creating a startup and getting funding.
