I had a driver take out my mailbox a few years back, and I left it down for a few weeks because junk mail was just atrocious at the time. My local post office was not amused, eventually delivering a certified letter saying I was liable to pay a fine and a warning that if the mailbox was not put back up, I'd be fined every month. I understand it from their perspective, since its essentially wasted time and effort. I'm surprised it's possible to get away with not having a mailbox! I will try this again next time mine is taken out.
