The Metaverse Needs to Figure Out How to Deal with Sexual Assault
- rektide 4y agoOn the one hand yes we need to be vigilant & work towards better. On the other hand demanding a new medium right all longstanding virtual & real world wrongs as it's been created is infeasible & fantastic. This expectation that any social ills, anywhere, can be directly addressed & "solved" is the bad-Utopianism, the type that believes in absolutes g absolutism, that one well executed (authoritarian) move can "finally" address the ills. Life everywhere has a tenuousness to it. We should always be trying to improve. To think of guards. But honestly there's longstanding problems with reputation & trust in the rest of the online world, in the rest of the physical world. Spinning yarn that "this time we need to be extra sure it's all safe" is, imo, a misdeed.

- quantified 4y agoDoes antisocial activity need to be dealt with from outside the -verse, with gods and angels in the form of moderators, or from inside the -verse by police who are present and close by? Either way, who pays for the humans doing it? I'd think the users should pay for the moderation they want, not leave it up to a corporation that really doesn't have incentives or capacity aligned with the users.
