Pay People to Quit Having Kids (1999)
- quantified 4y agoThe more people refuse to allow new housing in their area, the more thus makes sense, to be funded by tax on these areas.

- Minor49er 4y agoIn a nutshell, this is advocating for eugenics by incentivizing poor people to stop reproducing
- t-3 4y agoNow, explain why that's a bad thing. Voluntary eugenics doesn't strike me as bad or immoral. If you're not forcibly sterilizing people, what's wrong with it?
- Minor49er 4y agoIt's coaxing people into no longer reproducing based on their financial status at the time. Explain why that's a good thing.
- t-3 4y agoThe human population, especially in the US, is a heavy burden upon the environment. Every birth we can prevent is a good thing.
- Minor49er 4y agoWhy especially in the US? India, China, and even all of Europe is more densely populated than the US. Why not advocate for eugenics in those countries?
- t-3 4y agoThe US is richer and has higher per-capita consumption of resources. The US as a whole has far greater climate impact, so it makes sense to focus here. I'm also a US citizen who doesn't speak other languages or have the type of money and political influence to be effective in other countries (also, most of them wouldn't even allow me entry if I did, but that's beside the point). I think it would be good if all countries adopted such policies and a forward-thinking vision of environmental responsibility though.
- Minor49er 4y agoThat's awfully arbitrary. Countries like Qatar and Montenegro have higher CO2 emissions per capita than anywhere else in the world, plus a dozen other countries that are ahead of the US. And if the idea is to pay people to quit having kids, why not employ this in poorer countries with greater populations and not the richest like the US? Finally, do you yourself take your own advice? You don't have children and never will, right?
