Ask HN: Are you hanging out in the metaverse?
If so, which, how and what are your experiences?
- kamroot 4y agoSo the answer for me is, I am not sure. I have a Oculus 2 and often "log in" and check it out. I use it primarily for entertainment purposes (like visiting world cities etc.). But I haven not have not purchased anything in the meta verse. Is that considered hanging out in meta verse or is that just old-fashioned VR? My point is it is not clear to me what is meta verse and if it is supposed to be different from VR. I would love to read what other write about their experiences.
- bemmu 4y agoYes, we do (non-VR) Roblox with my son and mom while also video chatting. I also started building there full time. On my own time I also like to explore VRChat in VR, as it’s a nice counter to the sanitized Roblox worlds.
- Kaze404 4y agoI play MMOs so I'm always hanging out in some virtual space. Calling it metaverse makes no sense to me.
- jstx1 4y agoStop trying to make metaverse happen.
- zempfel 4y agoNo. The commercialization of our public spaces in the real world is bad enough already, there's no way I'm opting into a commercialized-by-default virtual world to waste my time in.
- op00to 4y agoNo? Why would I?
- drumhead 4y agoLol, no, unless you consider an MMO to be the metaverse.
- dontbenebby 4y agoNo, I'm in a café about to pack up and strip down my bag for the pride march. Join us in a shared reality.
- tomcam 4y agoI work on my farm, study music, am developing a new product, and enjoy actual conversations with my trophy wife and amazing kids IRL. No time for “hanging out in the metaverse”, which sounds depressing AF.
- altdataseller 4y agoWhat product u developing?
- tomcam 4y agoOpen source tech doc platform
- stuntkite 4y agoThe trophy wife comment is weird. You could have just said wife but with just that one added word now I am confused by your sentence. Normally people use that phrase to describe a hot young lady a rich guy is married to usually as a second marriage who is less of a partner and more of a purchase? I've never heard anyone who wasn't flagging a hotwifing fetish say something like that. This is a strange forum for that. You could get her 3D scanned and put her in a trophy room on the metaverse?
- tomcam 4y agoIt’s a family joke. Only marriage, been married to her for 30 years. I still think of her as a hot young lady, tbh. She’s insanely beautiful.
- f0e4c2f7 4y agoYes - mostly VRChat but other good ones when I can find them (usually custom maps for other games). I find the hangouts to be amazing about 40% of the time and I'm actively trying to build more spaces people can socialize in. I've met some interesting and unusual people in VR.
- krapp 4y agoI don't consider VR Chat to be part of the "metaverse." I only consider Facebook's (as yet mostly nonexistent) VR hype fantasy the "metaverse" since they appropriated the term for marketing purposes, and it wasn't a part of common parlance for anyone except maybe fans of Snow Crash until Facebook started pushing it. Now Facebook owns the term and it's dead to me. And yes, I also refuse to call them Meta.
- Raed667 4y agoNo. The "metaverse" failed to have its cool moment before corporations and greed took over. It missed the mark. Whenever I hear about the "metaverse", I hear about Facebook, NFTs and corporations trying to outrun the trend. It makes it very uncool. They skipped the step where young and "hip" people appropriate the platform and went straight away to corporate cringe and crypto grifting.
- bravetraveler 4y agoNope, it only innovates separating people from money I play 10+ year old games that technically count, but I assume this is the corporate web3 'decentralized through nauseating repetition' idea instead
- me_me_mu_mu 4y agoI prefer real world. I do hope all the annoying, self absorbed narcissist type people go and live in metaverse though. Would be awesome to finally live in a selfie free real world, just livin.
- midislack 4y agoYou mean Second Life?
