No, the sentiment about frozen food being superior is on the mark although the exact argument isn’t correct.
Frozen produce is harvested at peak, frozen nearby, and then transported. The texture suffers, but in other respects this is far superior to the “fresh” produce you get, which has to survive transportation at room temperature. Whether you would prefer frozen depends on what you are getting and how you prepare it, but there are tons of scenarios where you should prefer frozen foods.
Certain foods are clear winners frozen, like peas, corn, spinach, if they are going to be cooked. If you’re making sauces, fillings, pies, etc from berries, frozen berries are your best bet. The non-frozen berries have to be shelf stable and the shelf stable ones don’t taste good. The good tasting berries keep well frozen.

- sokoloff 4y agoI’d expect frozen pineapple to be quite good even after thawing. It has a lot of long fiber for structure that I’d expect would survive. Frozen and thawed watermelon (and other similar melons) would likely be dreadful.
- mupuff1234 4y agoNot awful at all. Actually makes for a great summer popsicle.
- kcplate 4y agoIt’s good, but it’s not fresh either. It’s better than canned pineapple I think it depends on the application, in a situation or recipe where fresh fruit is important (like a tart), frozen fruits likely won’t measure up. In something baked (like a pie) frozen can work well. A smoothie, frozen fruits can be amazing.
- burnished 4y agoI've had good luck with frozen edamame, and I understand that freezing improves fish by killing parasites. Fun stuff. Thank you for the information. To clarify, I had intended to convey that they were effectively making stuff up by accusing that other person of some sort of squeamishness.
- HWR_14 4y agoEdamame is similar to peas, so it makes sense that if one freezes well they both do.
- burnished 4y agoYep, I only mention it because I recently realized it didn't have to be this special treat I only got when I went and ate sushi somewhere. I can just boil a handful of 'em for four minutes in salty water any time I want. Downright luxurious.
- spywaregorilla 4y agoIt is necessary to freeze fish to kill parasites. All the fresh fish you see in a supermarket was frozen at some point.
